What this indicator shows
TS1 describes the overall rate of mechanical thrombectomy (MT) across a thrombectomy network. It shows how frequently thrombectomy is delivered relative to the total number of stroke admissions within the system.
This indicator provides a high-level view of access to thrombectomy at system level, rather than performance of individual hospitals.
Included
- All patients who received a mechanical thrombectomy within the thrombectomy network.
- All stroke admissions to hospitals included in the network (hub and referring hospitals).
Excluded
- Patients admitted to hospitals not included in the thrombectomy network.

How TS1 is defined
TS1 is calculated as the number of thrombectomy procedures started expressed as a proportion of all recorded stroke admissions within the thrombectomy network.
- Numerator
The total number of patients who received a thrombectomy within the system. - Denominator
The total number of patients directly admitted with stroke to any hospital included in the thrombectomy network.
This includes admissions to both hub and referring (spoke) hospitals within the network.
How to interpret this indicator
- Higher values indicate a greater proportion of stroke admissions receiving thrombectomy across the system.
- The indicator reflects system-wide access and pathway effectiveness, rather than decision-making at a single site.
- TS1 should be interpreted alongside other TSS indicators, particularly measures of timeliness and variation in access.
Important considerations
- TS1 does not indicate whether individual patients were appropriate for thrombectomy.
- Differences between systems may reflect factors such as case mix, geography, referral pathways, and service configuration.
- This indicator is intended for system-level comparison and improvement, not assessment of individual hospitals.
