At SSNAP, we do not directly or report on the rate of VTE. We use evidence from the CLOTS 3 trial in favour of Intermittent Pneumatic Compression sleeves for prevention of deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism in stroke patients who are admitted to hospital, and record the number of patients admitted to hospital who have IPC applied at any point. NHS Improving Quality put forward a bid in 2013 to monitor the uptake of this evidence based treatment and increase the usage of IPC sleeves in stroke units. There was some pump priming from them (£1million in total was provided for hospitals in England) to encourage uptake.
New questions relating to IPC were added to the SSNAP data set in April 2014 and are mandatory for hospitals to complete.
We have put the results according to each team as part of our routine reporting in the public domain since July 2013. We put the overview summarised in our summative pdf public reports but you can find the more detailed data on IPC in multiple areas of the SSNAP website. Within the periodic reports, you can view both national and team level information on the number of patients receiving IPC and the length of time in days that IPC is applied for within our periodic reports. All results can be found in the results section of the SSNAP webpage.
IPC rates within the periodic reports (Ref: Tab J, Row 35.1) can be found here: https://www.strokeaudit.org/results/Clinical-audit/National-Results.aspx.
Additionally we have the same information available as an annual figure. In the annual 17/18 full results portfolio you can see national and team level annual figures for IPC rates. These are displayed as annual changes over time, from April 2014 up to March 2018.
Annual IPC rates (Ref: Tab J, Row 35.1) can be found here: https://www.strokeaudit.org/results/Clinical-audit/National-Results.aspx and selecting ‘annual’.
Summative PDF public reports can be found here: https://www.strokeaudit.org/results/Clinical-audit/National-Results.aspx and selecting ‘periodic’ and ‘Aug-Nov 2017’.
